Why did the tortoise cross the road? To get the shell out of dodge!

A beaver, a sheep, and an owl walk into a Brooklyn doctor’s office… it sounds like the start to a long-winded, groan-worthy joke your uncle might tell at Thanksgiving. But actually, it’s much, much better. In reality, it’s the first few entries in this year’s Best Animal Rescues list.

This annual tradition dates back to 2018, and first responders from around the world still continue to amaze us. And because every year brings such varied, interesting, and inspiring rescue stories, reflecting back on the year’s best (and reliving our favorite puns) truly is our favorite way to shut down the engines before the new year.

With that in mind, let’s get straight to it. Read on for 2024’s best animal rescues by police officers, firefighters, and other first responders.
